An easy pancake batter recipe that will make perfect Shrove Tuesday pancakes every time (although great any time of the year!).
While Easter is a different time every year, Shrove Tuesday, or Pancake Day, falls on the same day of the week each year.
You might even hear it referred to as Fat Tuesday!
Why do we have Shrove Tuesday?
Shrove Tuesday is all about using up tasty foods in the house before Lent.
For the full list of ingredients and printable instructions, please see the recipe card at the end of this post. But, before you scroll straight there, take a look at the information just below.
The whole idea is that eggs and fats can be made into delicious recipes so making pancakes from the ingredients is an excellent way to use up the food, before going on a fast for Lent (which starts the following day on Ash Wednesday).
Pancake Day always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday.
As Easter changes every year (depending on when the full moon occurs after the day of the vernal equinox, as well as a load of other things), this means the traditional day to eat pancakes also changes.
However - and a big however - this does not mean you can't enjoy pancakes at any time of the year 🙂
But, the most important question - should you flip?
Whether you want to flip your pancake is up to you 🙂
There is no benefit to doing it (other than your kids will think you're a superstar!)
If you do it wrong, you'll have a pancake mess that you won't likely get straight again. It can sometimes work out easier to flip it using a spatula.

Here's the easy Shrove Tuesday Pancake Recipe.
A couple of tips:
- Be sure to use a sieve to get any lumps out of the flour - it's worth the little extra time doing this.
- Make sure the pan is hot before you add any pancake batter.
Super-Simple Shrove Tuesday Pancake Recipe
Ingredients
- 250 g plain flour sieved to remove lumps
- 350 ml milk
- 4 eggs
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Place all the ingredients except the butter in a large bowl and whisk together to make a smooth batter.
- In a non-stick pan on a high heat put a small amount of the butter into the hot pan. Once melted ensure it coats the entire pan, then pour in enough batter mix to cover the pan (about ⅓ of a cm thick) and cook for approximately 1-1 ½ minutes on each side until nice and golden brown.
